Personal Statement
When I first came into this country I was encouraged by my father not to forget where I came from and especially not to forget my Spanish. My past has formed my present in that I did what my father wanted me to do and more. I quickly learned English and made sure I did not forget my Spanish. I credit my English knowledge to the required courses I took to get my AA at Monterey Peninsula College and I credit my Spanish improvement on the courses I took at CSUMB. It has been a long and bumpy road, however I can now officially say it is over and I finally got my degree. In 2008 I went back to school and worked hard to earn my AA. I chose to get a BA in Spanish because I love my culture and I love my language. Choosing a BA in Spanish allowed me to sink not only into the language, but also into the culture, which has given me a wealth of knowledge that only helps me become a better person and a better interpreter. I love to say I am the bridge of communication for English and Spanish speakers.
Acquiring a Spanish BA is perfect for me because I use my Spanish every day, especially with my family. I also use it professionally in my community almost on a daily basis when I am not in school. Interpreting has been and continues to be a rewarding experience that I am sure I would not get while working in a different position, in an office somewhere.
While taking Spanish for the professions, Spanish 305 and advanced Spanish grammar, Spanish 303 I was able to deepen my understanding of grammar, translation, and wrote professional documents geared towards possible future employers like resumes, cover letters and recommendations letters. While taking Intro to Spanish linguistics, Spanish 313 and History / Phonetic Structure of the Spanish Language, Spanish 302, I was able to sink into the comprehension of pronunciation of alphabet letters, syllables, words, position of tongue and which words require nasalizing or have no sound. My literature courses gave me an understanding of my culture, which allows me to understand the people I translate for or because knowing Spanish is not just about understands the language it is also about being sensitive to people’s culture. Having this knowledge and background makes for a better interpreter and it doesn’t matter whether I interpreting for a doctor or a lawyer. I am very excited about getting a Spanish BA because it makes me more knowledgeable and more informed about the Spanish language and my culture.
While doing my upper-division service learning, Spanish 301S I was able to put my experience as well as my education acquired at CSUMB to work at Natividad Medical Center. I was able to work with medical professionals and their Spanish only speaking clients. I was glad I helped make communication come through among parties. I helped doctors and patients of varied ages and I worked with volunteers that were of different cultures and different genders. I answered phones and directed patients to the correct departments. Doing my service learning at Natividad Medical Center only confirmed what my father told me a long time ago. He said that someday knowing two languages would come in handy. Pleasing my father about not forgetting my roots and especially my language has proven to be a good skill to have professionally. I was very happy to be a part of Natividad Medical Center for my service learning.
